Introduction
'Where transition was most effective there were detailed action plans managed by staff with specific responsibilities for effective transfer of pupils into secondary schools and supported by regular meetings between key staff at the various schools.'

‘Our focus on tailoring teaching and learning at Key Stage 3 recognises the problems that starting secondary school can bring. However there are other specific actions that schools and parents can take. Sharing pupil information between schools, continuity in curriculum, teaching and learning, and behaviour policies, and the full engagement of parents are of critical importance.’

This guidance is designed to help senior leaders and teachers in Primary and Secondary schools identify and implement strategies, structures and systems that will strengthen the transfer and transition of pupils.
It uses examples of transfers and transitions from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, but much of the content is relevant for other key stages. It can be used in a number of ways:
- sequentially or discretely
- by individuals or in groups
- for revision, or support in a particular area.
